Australian university's decision to shut the prayer room sparks protests by Muslim students
The Swinburne Islamic Society is staging a protest against the closure of a multi-faith centre on a crucial Muslim worship day.
According to the university, they had no choice but to take action because of ongoing breaches of guidelines by certain group members.
Mohammed Bouras feels that his sense of belonging and safety at university is under threat.
The Multi-Faith Centre at the Swinburne University of Technology has provided a space for Muslim international students who moved to Victoria last year to connect with others and form friendships.
However, now he and other SWINIS members conflict with the university regarding access to the centre, which they have been denied for two consecutive Fridays for prayers—the most important day of worship for Muslims.
