Global health security concerns rise amid Ebola outbreak

A U.S. global health security expert has warned that difficulties in containing Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo expose weaknesses in global preparedness and could foreshadow increasingly complex biological threats.

Stephanie Psaki, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and former global health security coordinator at the U.S. National Security Council, said recurring outbreaks of Ebola and other dangerous viruses demonstrate the need for stronger disease surveillance, early-warning systems and faster international responses.

She also raised concerns about the potential risks of advanced biological research and the expanding use of artificial intelligence in the life sciences, while noting that these technologies could also help accelerate the development of vaccines and medicines.

The warnings underscore calls for greater investment in epidemic preparedness, biosafety and international cooperation to improve the global response to both naturally occurring outbreaks and emerging biological threats.
