India is on track for its deadliest year of anti-Muslim violence since systematic tracking began, according to the South Asia Justice Campaign's India Persecution Tracker.

The tracker says at least 44 Muslims have been killed in India since the start of 2026, including 19 in incidents involving state actors and 25 in attacks attributed to Hindu extremist assailants. It warns that the pace of killings could make 2026 the deadliest year since the organization began documenting such deaths in 2022.

The report also documents mass arrests, demolitions, forced expulsions and restrictions affecting Muslims. It identifies Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Kashmir and West Bengal among the areas where serious incidents have been reported.

According to the tracker, more than 1,000 Muslim homes, businesses and religious structures were demolished in at least 21 incidents across eight states during the period covered, while the number of such demolitions since the beginning of 2026 has exceeded 3,000.

The report alleges that Muslims face pressure from both state institutions and Hindu nationalist groups, including violence, detention, property demolitions and discrimination. Indian authorities have rejected allegations of religious discrimination, saying law-enforcement and administrative measures target illegal activity, security concerns or unlawful construction rather than religion.

The campaign warns that the cumulative impact of these developments extends beyond individual cases, contributing to growing concerns over the safety, rights and sense of belonging of India's roughly 200 million Muslims.
