The United Nations has convened its first Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance in Geneva, bringing together government officials, technology companies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and technical experts to advance discussions on a comprehensive international framework for AI governance.

The initiative seeks to ensure that the development of global AI governance reflects the interests and priorities of all nations, rather than being driven solely by countries with advanced technological capabilities. It also aims to promote equitable access to the benefits of artificial intelligence while fostering closer international collaboration.

Participants are expected to examine a range of issues, including the opportunities and risks associated with AI, strategies to bridge the global digital divide, mechanisms for strengthening international governance, and the importance of maintaining effective human oversight of AI systems in line with international law and recognized safety standards.

President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock said the dialogue is intended not only to address the regulation of emerging technologies but also to develop a shared global vision that aligns technological innovation with human dignity, fairness, and sustainable development.

The United Nations noted that current AI governance initiatives have been shaped predominantly by technologically advanced countries, leaving many developing nations with limited opportunities to contribute. Through the new dialogue, the organization aims to establish a permanent platform for exchanging expertise, sharing best practices, and promoting a more inclusive and coordinated international approach to AI governance.
