Thousands of mourners gathered at the Holy Shrine of Lady Zainab (peace be upon her) in Damascus to commemorate Ashura and the martyrdom of her brother, Imam Hussain (peace be upon him), despite ongoing security challenges in Syria.

Footage broadcast by local media showed the shrine adorned in black banners as elegies and mourning recitations echoed throughout its halls. Large crowds of worshippers attended the ceremonies to honor the memory of Imam Hussain, his family, and his loyal companions who were martyred in the Battle of Karbala.

The commemorations included the recitation of the account of Imam Hussain’s martyrdom and the hardships endured by him and his companions on the day of Ashura in 61 AH (680 CE). Participants responded with visible emotion, as prayers, lamentations, and expressions of grief filled the shrine.

The program also featured Hussaini gatherings, the recitation of Ashura supplications and Ziyarat, and sermons highlighting the enduring values of sacrifice, justice, reform, and steadfastness embodied by Imam Hussain (peace be upon him).

Despite the difficult circumstances facing Syria, the Shrine of Lady Zainab continues to attract large numbers of followers of the Ahlulbayt (peace be upon them) each year during Muharram. The shrine remains one of the country's most important centers for Ashura commemorations and Hussaini rituals.
