Ahmed Abdul Latif Al-Amin, Regional Director of China’s state-owned Shanghai Electric in Iraq, said the company is currently constructing gas-fired power plants expected to come online next summer, adding around 1,000 megawatts to the national grid.

He added that the company is also rehabilitating the Al-Haritha and Wasit power stations. The Al-Haritha plant is expected to contribute about 220 megawatts, while the Wasit station will be upgraded to reach its full design capacity of approximately 2,520 megawatts.

Al-Amin noted that recently contracted power projects are scheduled to enter service in phases during late 2027 and 2028, adding around 4,000 megawatts to the grid, with total capacity expected to reach about 5,000 megawatts by 2030.
