Glimpses from the life and sacrifices of Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (peace be upon him)
Following the martyrdom of his father, Imam Jafar Al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), on the twenty-fifth of Shawwal in 148 AH, Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) assumed the mantle of the Imamate under extremely critical circumstances. The followers of the Ahlulbayt (peace be upon them) were enduring severe oppression and injustice at the hands of the Abbasid rulers.
Despite these harsh conditions, Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) continued his mission of spreading guidance and wisdom, upholding the word of truth, and defending the tolerant and authentic message of Islam. He educated and nurtured a distinguished generation of scholars and played a vital role in confronting deviant intellectual and ideological movements, thereby safeguarding Islam and the Muslim community. He was also renowned for his significant contributions in the social and economic spheres, particularly for his generosity and continuous support for the poor and needy.
Although Imam Musa Al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) was unjustly imprisoned for many years, a number of his companions and students maintained secret contact with him. They sought his guidance on religious and jurisprudential matters in order to preserve the teachings of Islam from distortion and to ensure the continuity of the prophetic mission entrusted to him by his noble forefathers.
Imam Al-Kadhim (peace be upon him) steadfastly defended the religion of his grandfather, the Messenger of God Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), until he was poisoned and martyred on the twenty-fifth of Rajab in 183 AH, sacrificing all that he possessed in the way of God. In commemoration of these immense sacrifices made by the infallible Imams (peace be upon them), millions of devotees of the Ahlulbayt gather each year from across the world to mark the martyrdom of the Seventh Imam in Baghdad, where his holy shrine is located.
The pilgrims honor his virtuous life in an atmosphere of security and devotion, supported by extensive services provided over several days by Husseini mawkibs. These mawkibs offer a wide range of assistance to pilgrims, paying tribute to the enduring sacrifices of the pure progeny of the Prophet—sacrifices that continue to inspire generations and remain deeply rooted in the collective memory of the
