United Nations: Iraq’s elections held in a peaceful and orderly manner

The United Nations praised Iraq’s parliamentary elections on Wednesday, affirming that they were conducted peacefully and in an orderly fashion. The organization also reiterated its commitment to supporting Iraq as it continues to strengthen its democratic progress.

In a statement, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said, “The Secretary-General congratulates the Iraqi people on holding the parliamentary elections and commends the Independent High Electoral Commission for its efforts in ensuring the effective preparation and conduct of the elections.”

According to the statement, the Secretary-General welcomed “the generally peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections and is confident that the political parties involved will maintain the spirit of peace and respect for the electoral process while awaiting the announcement of the results.” He emphasized “the importance of the timely and peaceful formation of a government that reflects the will of the Iraqi people and fulfills their aspirations for stability and development.”

The Secretary-General also reaffirmed “the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Iraq in its progress toward consolidating democratic gains and realizing the aspirations of all Iraqis for a future of peace and prosperity.” As the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) nears its conclusion, he further expressed “appreciation for the Mission’s long-standing partnership with Iraqi electoral institutions and the culmination of more than two decades of electoral assistance provided by UNAMI.”
