In 2024, over 960 mosques across the Gaza Strip have been damaged or destroyed due to Israeli attacks, according to the Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs.

The ministry reported that 815 mosques were completely destroyed, while 151 sustained partial damage, with reconstruction costs estimated at $500 million.

The attacks also targeted 19 cemeteries and three churches, including the Great Mosque of Gaza and the Church of Saint Porphyrius, one of the oldest churches in the world. The destruction of the church led to the deaths of 18 people.

In addition to the devastation in Gaza, 20 mosques in the occupied West Bank were attacked. Many of Gaza’s mosques have been repurposed as shelters for displaced civilians. A recent Israeli airstrike in Deir Al-Balah targeted a mosque and a school housing displaced people, resulting in at least 26 fatalities.

Since the war began in October 2023, more than 45,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed, and nearly the entire population of Gaza has been displaced. The Ministry also reported the deaths of approximately 300 religious scholars, including imams and Quranic teachers, during the ongoing conflict.
