The representative of the World Health Organization in Iraq, Dr. Adham Rashad Ismail, confirmed that the situation in Iraq has not reached the point of collapse yet, while noting that the directives of the Religious Authority regarding the pandemic have limited its spread in the country.

In an interview with the International Media Center (IMC) during his visit to Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, Ismail said, “The reason for the visit is to coordinate with Imam Hussain Holy Shrine to conduct health awareness campaigns for Covid-19 in Karbala, as it is on the verge of a massive pilgrimage – Arbaeen.”

He added, "The awareness includes responding to malicious rumors about Covid-19 and urging pilgrims and citizens to adhere to health guidelines, such as wearing masks and gloves and frequent sterilization, as well as conducting free examinations for those unable to visit hospitals and buy treatment."

The WHO representative highlighted the role of the Supreme Religious Authority, Grand Ayatollah Sistani, saying, “He did a lot to limit the spread of Covid-19 in Iraq, as many people abide by his directives.”

In regards to the role of Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, “The Imam Hussain Holy Shrine also had a great role in treating thousands of Covid-19 patients at the al-Shifaa Urgent Care Centers in various Iraqi provinces, where more than 3000 beds were provided with all their medical equipment and personnel under the supervision of the Ministry of Health.”

Ismail expressed his fear of the winter season and the approach of massive pilgrimages in the country, saying, “If they are carried out without preventive measures, they could lead to more Covid-19 infections. The situation in Iraq is now worrying, but it has not reached a point of collapse yet.”

The WHO representative called on all pilgrims to adhere to the preventive health measures.
