The Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain launches major tree-planting campaign in Karbala schools
Aqeel Kadhim Al-Sharifi, Director of Al-Warith Academy for Development at the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain, announced the launch of a large-scale environmental campaign under the slogan “Our Iraq is Green in Your Name, O Hussain.” The initiative aims to plant thousands of trees across educational institutions throughout the Governorate of Karbala.
Al-Sharifi explained that the campaign is part of a broader strategic effort to promote environmental awareness within the community, beginning with schools—particularly at the primary level. The initiative seeks to instill environmental values and foster a culture of conservation among students from an early age.
He noted that the project extends beyond tree planting. It also includes the formation of environmental teams in each participating school, which will work under the Academy’s guidance for ongoing development and oversight. These teams will consist of motivated and high-achieving students with a strong interest in environmental issues.
According to Al-Sharifi, selected students will receive specialized training through educational courses and field visits to nature reserves, the Shrine’s nurseries, and desert farms. The program is designed to empower students to become active contributors to environmental sustainability and future leaders in conservation efforts.
He emphasized that the campaign will continue until its goals are achieved, including planting thousands of trees across schools in the governorate and strengthening the connection between younger generations and sustainable environmental practices.
