The Holy Karbala Governorate has announced the start of oil and gas extraction from wells in the desert of the Ain Al-Tamur district, marking a major milestone that positions Karbala as an oil-producing Iraqi governorate capable of generating resources, supporting development projects, improving public services, and creating job opportunities.

Deputy Chairman of the Holy Karbala Provincial Council, lawyer Mahfoud Al-Tamimi, said the governorate is delivering “good news during these blessed days, which coincide with the birthdays of the infallible Imams in the holy month of Shaaban,” announcing the commencement of oil and gas extraction operations in the Ain Al-Tamur desert. He described the project as a pivotal turning point that will drive a new phase of development in the governorate.

Al-Tamimi emphasized that the timing and location of the announcement were not coincidental, but rather the result of exceptional efforts by the people of Karbala following 15 years of exploration work that began in 2011. He noted that operations initially took place in areas that were unsafe for work crews, but sustained efforts by local residents helped stabilize and secure the region, enabling the project to advance to the extraction phase. He added that the project will have a direct impact on job creation.

He further explained that revenues generated from oil and gas production will be invested in vital projects, including schools, roads, public services, and other infrastructure that benefits citizens across the governorate. Al-Tamimi expressed appreciation for all those whose efforts contributed to making Karbala one of Iraq’s oil-producing governorates, stressing that these resources will be used to sustain long-term development.
