The Secretary-General of the Iraqi Council of Ministers, Hamid Al-Ghazi, affirmed that the city of Ur represents one of the most significant symbols of human civilization and stands as the cradle of writing and legislation. He stressed that preserving and developing the ancient city remains a top national priority.
This came in a statement issued by his media office, which noted that Al-Ghazi met with the head of the Dhi Qar Reconstruction Fund and the staff of the Ur Tourist City. The statement emphasized that linking the ancient city of Ur with the tourist city through a comprehensive and integrated vision would transform its cultural heritage into a sustainable cultural, tourism, and economic resource.
Al-Ghazi highlighted ongoing efforts to expand the tourist city in order to provide integrated services capable of accommodating both local and international visitors, thereby increasing the city’s capacity. He underscored the importance of establishing hotels and lodging facilities that respect the region’s cultural and environmental character, both within the tourist city and in the center of Nasiriyah.
He further stressed the need to adopt architectural designs for the International Ur Museum that are inspired by the historical identity of Ur, while offering services that meet the standards of international, religious, and cultural tourism. He also called for the development of plans to establish family entertainment areas and comprehensive service facilities, including restaurants, cafés, traditional markets, and green spaces.
Al-Ghazi emphasized the importance of cooperation with national and international experts to ensure that the museum is constructed in a manner befitting Ur’s global stature. He highlighted the need for meticulous attention to technical and architectural details, including design, lighting, exhibition methods, and the use of modern interactive technologies. He concluded by affirming that the International Ur Museum will stand as a cultural landmark introducing the world to Iraq’s rich and enduring history.
