United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres firmly condemned the forced displacement of Gaza’s population and reiterated the need for a two-state solution to achieve lasting peace between Palestine and Israel.

Speaking at the 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad, Guterres said, “The region—and the world—are facing serious challenges, beginning with Gaza.” He added, “Nothing justifies the mass terrorism being inflicted on the Palestinian people. We urgently call for a ceasefire and sustainable stability between Palestine and Israel.”

He stressed the UN’s rejection of the ongoing displacement in Gaza and labeled the construction of Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories as “illegal.”

Guterres reaffirmed that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace, stating that “Jerusalem should serve as the capital of both states, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.”

He also voiced strong support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of full governmental control over all Lebanese territory and encouraging ongoing reform efforts. “We continue to support Lebanon’s armed forces and institutions,” he said.

Turning to Iraq, Guterres praised the country’s progress in strengthening its institutions and achieving greater stability. “We are committed to supporting the Iraqi government and people through humanitarian assistance and human rights empowerment,” he said.
