UN: Palestinians facing death amid ongoing Israeli blockade
The United Nations has warned that the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is worsening, with Palestinians facing the risk of death as Israel's blockade enters its third month.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the situation in Gaza remains catastrophic, describing the blockade as part of "an ongoing genocide that has lasted for more than 18 months." The office noted that around 70% of Gaza’s population is either living in areas occupied by Israeli forces, under forced displacement orders, or both.
In a statement on the “X” platform, OCHA stressed that the UN and its partners are ready to scale up relief operations immediately once the blockade—imposed since March 2—is lifted.
Meanwhile, UNRWA spokesperson Adnan Abu Hasna reported that over 66,000 children in Gaza are suffering from malnutrition due to Israel’s starvation policy and the continued closure of crossings.
UNRWA has called on the international community to urgently pressure Israel to lift the blockade and allow the entry of food, medicine, and fuel to prevent further loss of life and end the collective punishment of Gaza’s population.
The UN and humanitarian groups also warned that the ongoing restrictions are worsening the crisis in Gaza, where over 80% of the population lives below the poverty line and nearly 90% suffers from food insecurity.
