Government Advisor: 125 pharmaceutical projects await approval to boost national production
Hamoudi Al-Lami, Advisor to the Prime Minister for Industry, Development, and Private Sector Affairs, announced that Iraq now has 32 active pharmaceutical factories, with 125 more projects under review. He also highlighted the registration of new medications for cancer, diabetes, and blood pressure to strengthen the country's drug security.
Al-Lami noted that the pharmaceutical industry in Iraq is growing rapidly, with 32 factories operating at full capacity. Additionally, 18 new factories are under construction, with some nearing completion at 95%. He emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader push to boost national production.
Since the launch of the pharmaceutical industry localization program, 677 new pharmaceutical formulas have been registered. These include 42 types of antibiotics, 34 blood pressure medications, 29 diabetes treatments, and 24 drugs for cancer and blood diseases.
Al-Lami further explained that national factories supply medicines based on annual tenders from the Ministry of Health, which cover chronic diseases, antibiotics, and medications for blood diseases and cancer. These locally produced medicines are also distributed to pharmacies and health institutions, reducing reliance on imports.
He concluded by reaffirming the government's commitment to supporting the national pharmaceutical sector, which plays a key role in ensuring drug security and providing high-quality medicines at competitive prices.
