Baghdad recently witnessed the launch of Iraq’s first satellite ground station by the Ministry of Communications, marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and expanding its satellite communications capabilities.

Minister of Communications Mustafa Sanad described the facility as “the first ground station in Iraq’s history,” noting that “eleven access gateways have been established along the borders, bringing internet connectivity in Iraq under our control and supervision.”

He explained that opening a new avenue for satellite communications would contribute to developing the country’s telecommunications infrastructure and enable more effective national management of data transmission routes.

Meanwhile, Ali Yassin, Director General of the Telecommunications and Informatics Company, said the project aims to localize satellite communication services, strengthen digital infrastructure, and enhance Iraq’s capacity to manage data traffic and communications through nationally operated access gateways.

The initiative represents a step toward strengthening Iraq’s digital sovereignty, improving its control over communications infrastructure, and advancing the development of its telecommunications sector.
