As part of its ongoing humanitarian and service initiatives, the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine is intensifying efforts to help alleviate the water crisis in Basra by providing residents with large quantities of clean, potable water.

Acting on the directives of Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi Al-Karbalaey, representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, and Hassan Rashid Jawad Al-Abayechi, Secretary-General of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, staff from the Water Treatment Plants Unit in Basra, affiliated with the Maintenance Department of the Shrine’s General Secretariat, have continued intensive operations to maintain and operate water treatment plants. These efforts aim to ensure a reliable supply of safe drinking water for residents amid the ongoing water scarcity affecting the province.

In a statement obtained by the shrine’s official website, the department explained that “this humanitarian initiative was launched in accordance with the directives of Sheikh Abdul-Mahdi Al-Karbalaey, representative of the Supreme Religious Authority, and Hassan Rashid Jawad Al-Abayechi, Secretary-General of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine. It aims to alleviate citizens’ suffering and provide clean, purified water to as many residents of the province as possible.”

The department further noted that “teams continue to distribute thousands of liters of water daily to residential neighborhoods, government offices, and hospitals. These efforts are intended to mitigate the effects of the water crisis and improve health and living conditions throughout Basra.”

It added that the campaign is continuing daily to maintain a steady supply of sterilized, potable water in coordination with the relevant authorities, helping sustain essential services and safeguard public health across the province.

These ongoing efforts reflect the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine’s commitment to supporting the Iraqi people across all provinces, responding to urgent humanitarian needs, and promoting the values of solidarity, compassion, and national responsibility.
