A new estimate by Germany’s Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) puts the number of Muslims in Germany at between 6.6 million and 7 million in 2025, equivalent to roughly 8 to 8.5 percent of the country’s population.

The BAMF Research Centre said the figure represents an increase from its previous estimate of 5.3 million to 5.6 million Muslims in 2019. The latest estimate covers Muslims with a migration background from predominantly Muslim countries and draws on demographic data and BAMF research into Muslim life in Germany.

The increase is attributed in significant part to immigration from Muslim-majority countries, including conflict-affected areas of the Middle East. The study also found that Germany’s Muslim population has become increasingly diverse in terms of countries and regions of origin.

People of Turkish origin remain the largest group, accounting for 39.4 percent of the Muslim population covered by the study. Another 29.4 percent have backgrounds in Arab-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa.

The Central Council of Muslims in Germany welcomed the figures. Its chairman, Abd Al-Samad Al-Yazidi, called for equal participation and recognition of Muslims as an established part of German society.
