Muhammad has remained the most popular name for baby boys in England and Wales for the third consecutive year, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Nearly 6,000 boys were named Muhammad in 2025, almost 2,000 more than Noah, which ranked second. Leo and Luca rose to third and fourth place, respectively, while Arthur, Oliver, and George slipped down the rankings.

The ONS records different spellings separately. In addition to Muhammad, Mohammed ranked 20th and Mohammad 55th, together accounting for around 2,600 more baby boys.

Among girls, Olivia remained the most popular name, followed by Lily, Amelia, Isla, and Florence.

Muhammad has ranked among the top 10 boys' names since 2016 and has appeared in the top 100 since 1997. The different spellings reflect variations in transliterating the Arabic name into English and are commonly associated with different cultural and regional traditions.

The ONS has previously said the name's continued popularity reflects several factors, including the growth of Britain's Muslim population and the desire of many families to preserve their religious and cultural heritage, alongside increasingly diverse naming trends across the UK.
