UN agencies warn Gaza health system near collapse amid blocked medical supplies

UN agencies have warned that Gaza’s humanitarian and health crisis is rapidly deteriorating as ongoing violence, disease outbreaks, and restrictions on medical aid continue to strain the territory’s collapsing healthcare system.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), only around half of Gaza’s hospitals remain partially operational, while none are fully functioning. Severe shortages of medicines, laboratory equipment, oxygen concentrators, orthopedic materials, and other critical supplies have further weakened healthcare services.

UN officials also warned that the lack of diagnostic equipment is hindering efforts to detect and contain infectious diseases, particularly amid overcrowding, unsafe sanitation conditions, limited access to clean water, and growing rodent infestations.

In addition, prosthetic limbs are reportedly classified as “dual-use” items and remain restricted, leaving thousands of amputees without adequate treatment or rehabilitation support.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said it continues to play a central role in Gaza’s health response, but Israeli restrictions have prevented the agency from delivering medicines into Gaza and the West Bank. UNRWA also reported that nearly 400 of its staff members have been killed since the start of the war.
