Halal sector could open promising new market opportunities for Vietnam
The global Halal market is valued at more than $2 trillion annually, and Vietnam is seeking a larger share through new policies and international cooperation.
Vietnam’s Decree No. 127/2026/ND-CP on Halal product and service quality management has established an important legal framework for Halal production, certification and trade, according to Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Commission for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) Tran Hau Ngoc.
Ngoc said standards and quality management are essential for building trust and improving the competitiveness of Vietnamese Halal products. He described Halal as a “new market gateway” for Vietnamese exports beyond traditional sectors.
The Halal economy now extends beyond food to include cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, tourism, logistics, finance and Muslim-friendly services, making it one of the world’s fastest-growing markets.
Experts say Halal should be viewed not only from a religious perspective, but also as a matter of quality standards, production governance and global market access. Vietnam’s growing cooperation with Islamic countries and international Halal certification organizations is also creating new export opportunities.
Vietnam benefits from strong agricultural resources, expanding manufacturing capacity and a favorable position in regional supply chains. However, businesses must strengthen quality control, traceability and compliance with increasingly strict international standards to compete effectively in the Halal market.
STAMEQ Chairman Nguyen Nam Hai said Halal development in Vietnam will focus on improving standards systems, expanding certification capacity and strengthening state management. Authorities are also working to align Vietnam’s standards with international frameworks established by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC).
Vietnam has also signed Halal cooperation agreements with Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). To date, STAMEQ has licensed three Halal certification organizations, which have certified more than 1,000 Vietnamese enterprises across multiple sectors.
