The Health and Medical Education Authority participated in the third AGILE DxRx Conference, held in Gdańsk, presenting Iraq’s experience in the early detection of lung cancer and chest diseases. The event brought together leading experts and researchers from around the world, highlighting Iraq’s growing scientific engagement in the medical field.

Dr. Ahmed Salem Al-Khafaji, Chief Supervisor of the “Iraq for a Healthy Lung” project, stated that the participation reflects Iraq’s commitment to keeping pace with global medical advancements. He noted that the Authority presented the IHLP initiative, Iraq’s first structured national program for risk-based early screening using low-dose CT scans in a resource-limited healthcare setting.

He explained that preliminary results showed around 32% of screened individuals were classified as high-risk and referred for advanced CT imaging, in line with modern clinical pathways—an approach that enhances early detection and helps reduce mortality rates.

Al-Khafaji added that the project has been scientifically documented in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, one of the world’s leading publications in the field, reflecting the credibility and potential of the Iraqi model as a framework for other countries with similar healthcare challenges.

This participation underscores the expanding presence of the Health and Medical Education Authority in international scientific forums and highlights its role in advancing evidence-based healthcare, strengthening preventive medicine, and elevating Iraq’s position in global medical research.
