After nearly 18 years of planning and public debate, the first purpose-built mosque in eastern Germany has officially opened in Erfurt, the capital of Thuringia. The Mahmoud Mosque was inaugurated just days before the start of Ramadan, with only a limited police presence and without the large-scale protests that had accompanied the project in earlier years.

According to a Reuters report, the mosque is situated in the Marbach industrial area on the outskirts of the city. The white structure features a decorative minaret approximately eight meters high, representing a significant architectural shift from the temporary prayer spaces previously used by Muslims in the region.

Plans for the mosque date back to 2007 but encountered repeated opposition, particularly from right-wing activists and groups who argued that a visibly Islamic architectural landmark carried cultural and political symbolism in a region marked by strong populist movements. In earlier stages, the construction site was the scene of demonstrations and anti-project banners, and the issue periodically surfaced in local political debates.

The official opening, however, proceeded calmly. Police reported that only a small number of opponents were present and confirmed that the event concluded without major incidents.

Mosque administrators stated that the project cost approximately €1.4 million and was fully financed through donations from members of the local Muslim community. Friday sermons are delivered primarily in German to promote integration and engagement with wider society. In accordance with local regulations, the call to prayer will not be broadcast via loudspeakers.

According to data from the German Interior Ministry, hundreds of incidents classified as anti-Muslim crimes were recorded in 2025. Additionally, a civil society monitoring network documented thousands of cases of discrimination against Muslims in 2024, marking a notable increase compared to the previous year.

The opening of the Mahmoud Mosque thus represents both a milestone for the Muslim community in eastern Germany and a reflection of the broader social debates surrounding religious visibility and integration in the country.
